Abstract
This thesis analyzes the impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence on the profession of Colombian editors. It draws a parallel with the figure of Prometheus, the Titan from Greek mythology symbolizing knowledge and technological progress. The study included a review of articles that examine the early relationships between creative industries and AI, followed by twelve interviews with Colombian editors working in commercial and independent publishing houses, magazines, academic, scientific, and educational publications, as well as web and video game publishing. The interviews provided insights into editors’ perceptions of Generative AI from their unique perspective, the adaptations in their work—including methods of use, opportunities, and risks—and their essential characteristics that gain greater significance in a context of technological innovation. The findings reveal that while editors see Generative AI as a useful tool for optimizing certain aspects of their work, they weigh its benefits against the associated risks. Some are hesitant to adopt it for ethical reasons or because they feel it dehumanizes a profession deeply tied to personal passion. However, they agree that their profession is not at risk, as no tool currently exists that can manage or mediate an entire publishing process. Additionally, editors highlight the importance of their criterion, experience, and human connection–qualities that have become even more significant in a landscape of technological innovation.
